SCI REMC brings new solar array to Ellettsville, IN
Cooperative brings solar power to central Indiana.
Officials from South Central Indiana REMC dedicated a new solar array on State Road 46 today that will turn sunshine into electricity for homes and businesses throughout the region.
The 4,100-panel array on Flatwoods Road is capable generating one megawatt, enough electricity to power about 150 homes annually as the panels rotate east to west to follow the sun.
South Central Indiana REMC worked alongside Hoosier Energy, the electric cooperative’s power supplier, to identify a prime location for the array.
“As a cooperative, our focus is always local,” said Greg McKelfresh, President and CEO of South Central Indiana REMC, which serves more than 33,000 members in seven central Indiana counties.
“Thanks to this project, we are in a better position to learn how best to tap into the power of the sun to bring renewable energy to our communities,” McKelfresh added.
The solar array is the sixth of 10 that Hoosier Energy is adding to its renewables portfolio as part of an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy to further the cooperative commitment of affordability, reliability and community.
