As the 2024-25 school year begins, 95 college students from Hoosier Energy member cooperatives are reaping the benefits of scholarships awarded this past spring and summer.

 

That total surpasses last year’s previous high-water mark of 90 and includes a pair of statewide scholarship winners. Southern Indiana Power’s Cyrilla Sommer of Tell City received a $1,000 Indiana Electric Cooperatives Manager’s Association Scholarship, and Wayne-White Counties Electric Cooperative’s Jaden Schwarzlose of Edwards County received a $2,000 Thomas H.  Moore Illinois Electric Cooperatives Memorial Scholarship.

 

Member cooperative students received nearly $95,000 in total scholarship money during the spring and summer of 2024.

 

At Bartholomew County REMC, Brilynn Martin of Columbus North (Franklin College) and Rachel Kuhlman of Columbus East (Indiana State) received $1,500 scholarships. The Alex Barkes Memorial Scholarship of $5,000 went to Leah Bachmann of Columbus East, who will study Youth Development at Indiana University.

 

Clark County REMC awarded 18 scholarships, led by the $2,500 Cindy Hockensmith Memorial Scholarship winner Ava Grace Voyles of Borden, who will attend IU Southeast and major in Elementary Education. Recipients of $1,000 scholarships included 11 students heading to IU Southeast: Gabe Lamb and Brenn Peay of Floyd Central, Simon Berry of Community Montessori, Kennedy Bridges-Smith and Olivia Melton of Jeffersonville, Nigel Couch and Baylor Noblitt of Silver Creek, Rosemary Jackson of Henryville, Eli Baker of Trinity, Reece Roberts of Rock Creek Academy and Isabella Spencer of Charlestown. Five of the Clark County REMC scholarship recipients are headed to Ivy Tech Sellersburg, including Victoria Van Fleet of Homeschool, Madison Jones of New Washington, Layken Kochert of Silver Creek, Landyn Shumate of Floyd Central and Sim Samnang Ou of Jeffersonville. Also earning a scholarship is Jacob Medlock of Henryville, who will attend Purdue Polytechnic.

 

Six $1,500 scholarship winners were announced by Harrison REMC. They are Kali Archibald of South Central, Mackenzie Baker of West Washington, Lauren Hasenour of Floyd Central, Makenna Magner of Lanesville, Mason Swarens of North Harrison and Ella Wilkins of Corydon Central.

 

Henry County REMC also awarded six scholarships. These were each $1,000 through Operation Round Up and went to Elise Boyd of Shenandoah, Carson Van Cleave of Cowan, Eli Sayre of Blue River Valley and the trio of Luke Roan, Lily Farmer and Morely Blessinger of New Castle.

 

Jackson County REMC awarded three $1,000 scholarships to Kenton Chase of West Washington, Max Maschino of Jennings County and Reece Wineinger of Eastern.

 

A pair of $2,000 scholarships were announced by JCREMC. They went to Jonathan Sever of Franklin Community and Kinsey Shipp of Whiteland.

 

Orange County REMC had six Operation Round Up scholarship winners. They are Carter Allen, Aiden Keller and Jill Salmon of Orleans, Olivia McSpadden of Paoli, Molly Tucker of Springs Valley and Madeline Woosley of West Washington.

 

RushShelby Energy announced a pair of spring $1,000 scholarship winners in Joshua Hadler of Shelbyville and Quentin Livezey of Morristown. Another four $1,000 winners were drawn at the annual meeting with the winners being Matthew Bunton, Benjamin Means, Abigail Marshall and Kennedy Pile.

 

The five $1,000 John D. Rudd Memorial Scholarship recipients from South Central Indiana REMC this year were Kasey Etter and Michele Toloday of Martinsville, Abigail Mayer of Bloomington North, Madison Pardue of Tabernacle Christian and Grace Vaughn of Monrovia.

 

Southeastern Indiana REMC gave out three $500 scholarships at its annual meeting. Recipients were Preston Chapman of Switzerland County, Carson Phillips of Oldenburg Academy and Benjamin Vuko of Lawrenceburg.

 

Five Operation Round Up scholarships were awarded by Southern Indiana Power. They went to Kendall Cash and Allie Thomas of Perry Central, Collin Kessans and Kasey Wheatley of Tell City, and Owen Rahman of Heritage Hills.

 

Wayne-White Counties Electric Cooperative awarded 10 students a $500 scholarship at the annual meeting. The winners were Alyssa Alldredge and Alora Campbell of Grayville Community, Ashton Bullard and Mason Kelly of Wayne City, Alexander Clements of Cisne, Landen Elliott of Carmi-White County, Wyatt Landingham of Edwards County, Carrigan Little and Hannah Moore of Hamilton County, and Emersyn Robbins of Fairfield Community.

 

Another 10 students received a $750 scholarship from Whitewater Valley REMC. The recipients were Riley Blevins, Anna Buckler, Kori Craig, Mia Cupp, Ruthie Hilbert, Kayce May, Carly McCashland, Jonathan Snyder, Chandler Terrell and Stone Wilhelm.

 

WIN Energy REMC also awarded 10 scholarships. Receiving $1,000 apiece were Ella Adams of Pike Central, Baxter Dellinger and Evan Dreiman of South Knox, Deven Burger of Gibson Southern, Katherine Hurst of Princeton, Ben McKinley, Chelsea Scarbrough and Carol Witt of Sullivan, and Lucy Sheren and Sidney Kahre of North Knox.
